Conference Goals
The primary goal of the Annual National Conference on Student Government is to support student government leaders and advisors in institutions of higher learning in advancing the local efforts to improve the student experiences on campuses across the country.
The conference seeks to build a community among attendees that is open to diversity of ideas, approaches and solutions, and provides opportunities and resources to grow personally and professionally.
Conference Content
Student government student leaders and advisors can learn together or in sessions specially designed for their role in SGA. Sessions are interactive and focus on solution-oriented content with plenty of opportunities for questions, dialog, and idea sharing.
Potential topics include:
- advisor-only sessions led by experienced SGA advisors
- advocacy for student groups (LGBTQ, students of color)
- the role of SGA in campus diversity, equity, inclusion and sense-of-belonging efforts
- SGA organization and structure
- programming ideas for all types and sizes of campuses
- roundtables by office and types of school
- building and maintaining an effective student government
- branding and marketing yourself and your SGA
- motivating yourself and others
- attracting and engaging new student leaders to SGA
- understanding campus politics
- communication skill-building for audiences such as administrators, faculty, and fellow students
- critical race theory versus academic freedom
- student leadership team transition
- how to effectively run meetings
- program planning
- how to delegate
- team building
- and other topics identified by conference attendees.
Attendees have the power to shape the conference content by providing input before and during the conference. Conference sessions will be tailored based on attendees’ needs and interests.
